The Perpetual Fifty Cents

By Daniel Krook

Ok, so about 2 months ago the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority increased the price of a subway or bus ride from a dollar fifty to two bucks.

Having bought a MetroCard prior to the switch - and 50% of New Yorkers who bought their card before May 1st are in the same boat here - I am stuck with a perpetual fifty cents on my MetroCard. That's fifty cents that's good as gone.

Now, they say about 2 million people ride the subway each day (and that doesn't include all the geezers who only use the buses) and I would say at least a third of those people still have a MetroCard from the old epoch. Now 50% of that 666,000 are also screwed out of their 50 cents.

That's $333,000 bucks that the city owes us. Bastards.
